Blair Parents' Post

Dear Parents,

Greetings from Blair, where we began our 170th year with Orientation, Convocation, a week of classes, Soccerfest, Super Sunday and, finally, the much-anticipated opening of Weber Hall (newly outfitted for our math department) and state-of-the-art Chiang Center for Innovation and Collaboration (CIC). I am excited for the work that will take place in the CIC and across campus this year and look forward to continued collaboration with you on all fronts.

Best wishes,
Chris Fortunato

Meet the Class of 2021!

Blair Academy welcomed its 460-member student body to campus in early September, including 92 freshman in the class of 2021. Comprising 48 girls and 44 boys, the ninth-grade class hails from 14 states (California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia) and five foreign countries (China, Hong Kong, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam).

Traditional Convocation Ceremony Sets Tone for Blair's 170th Year

Blair students and faculty came together on the evening of September 11 to ceremoniously begin the 2017-2018 school year at Convocation, which included an all-school, bagpipe-led procession across campus, performances by Blair musicians, and remarks from the chaplain and Head of School.

Parent Volunteers

We would like to extend a special thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped during the 170th Opening of School at Blair. From welcoming our new families by making calls over the summer months and sharing your Blair experience, to greeting students and parents during registration and Underclass Photos, your enthusiasm and warmth helped create a smooth transition into an exciting new year!

If you would like to become part of the Blair parent volunteer group (PVG), click here to read about the various volunteer opportunities and/or register online.

Senior Portraits

Senior portraits will be taken by photographer Justin Baiter. Portrait seatings began September 18 and will be completed by October 20, so be sure your senior has appropriate attire: ties/jackets for gentlemen, appropriate length/fit dresses or tops and pants/skirts for ladies. Portrait seatings are free as the photos will be used for yearbook publication and parents will be invited to purchase photos from the photographer. Information on senior portrait proof previews, ordering and pricing will be forwarded to parents as soon as it is available. Note that proofs for senior portraits will be sent by mail.

Paralympic Medalist Opens Skeptics with 'Resilience: How to Make the Impossible Possible'

Author and leadership expert Dr. Bonnie St. John has achieved success in "impossible" ways her entire life. She joins the Blair community for the opening 2017-2018 Society of Skeptics lecture on September 19, where she will speak on the essential quality of resilience and offer audience members insight and practical tips on "how to make the impossible possible." Dr. St. John is the inaugural speaker in Blair's new Chiang Center for Innovation and Collaboration; her lecture begins at 7 p.m. in the facility's signature Collaboration Forum.

'Life Comes First' Opens 2017-2018 Romano Gallery Season

Blair Academy's Romano Gallery opened its 2017-2018 exhibition season on September 4 with a showing of paintings by artist and teacher Grier de Langley Torrence. Titled Life Comes First, the exhibition features figurative compositions painted in small increments that reflect Mr. Torrence's life and the lives of his family and friends. Together, the daily images comprise a visual poem or metaphorical diary of the people, places and things that have been present throughout the artist's life.

Performing Arts

The Government Inspector
Wean Theatre
Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts

October 19, 20 & 21, 7:30 p.m.
Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher from the original by Nikolai Gogol

Nikolai Gogol's rollicking 19th-century satire of bad behavior begins with a case of mistaken identity as the townspeople of a small Russian hamlet learn that an undercover government inspector is coming in this timely and funny exploration of provincial corruption.

Senior Jayson Oweh '18 is one of just over 90 football athletes nationwide selected to play in the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game, the premier high school football game in the U.S. A 6-foot, 5-inch, 236-pound defensive end, Jayson is the first Blair Academy student to achieve this honor. He is currently ranked fifth overall among New Jersey football players and seventh in the nation among strong side defensive ends.

Coach Mantegna Shared Expertise at US & International Basketball Events

Blair head varsity boys' basketball coach Joe Mantegna participated in several prestigious basketball events over the spring and summer months. In April and May, the veteran coach shared his nearly three decades of team-leadership experience with fellow coaches and basketball administrators at USA Basketball Coach Academy, and, in August, he partnered with former Blair player and two-time NBA All-Star Luol Deng '03 for the fourth-consecutive year, serving as lead clinician at Deng Camp USA and Deng Top 50 Camp in London.

New Opportunities Develop for Blair's Student Photographers

Blair athletes weren't the only students to attend preseason: Eleven fine-art students participated in the School's first-ever photography preseason, during which they honed their picture-taking skills by capturing thousands of images, both on campus and farther afield. The three-day photo shoot was one of several new opportunities developed by photography teacher Tyson Trish to help Blair's student photographers create and share their art.

A Journey into History: Normandy Beach, France

The Allied Forces' June 6, 1944, D-Day landing at Normandy Beach, France, was one of World War II's most significant operations in the fight against the Nazi regime. This summer, Grace Miller '18, Aidan Smarth '20 and Associate Dean of Admission Teddy Wenner '96 journeyed deep into the history of the battle and subsequent liberation of Normandy during two weeks in France. Their trip included student homestays, tours of the battle sites and the surrounding region, and priceless opportunities to speak with those who lived through the war, all of which led to a deeper realization of the Allied soldiers' courage and the Norman citizens' enduring gratitude.

Faculty Summer Institute Focuses on Project-Based Learning & Collaborative Work

To maximize the number of teachers benefiting from professional development opportunities, Blair created a Faculty Summer Institute in 2017. During two week-long, on-campus programs focused on project-based learning, collaborative work and innovation, faculty members created more than 10 projects to be incorporated into the curriculum across disciplines.

From the Health Center

Parents of students taking daily medications, who opted to supply those medications to the health center, should supply them in pharmacy "single dose packages." Single dose packaging is sometimes referred to as blister-packaging. Your home pharmacist or mail-away pharmacy can assist with this. Please let them know that you need medications packaged in this fashion. Parents who supply medications should mail medications directly to the health center. Students may not have medications shipped to them.

Parents who have opted to have the health center obtain medications do not need to do anything. We have arranged to have medications single dose packaged, at no charge to you, from our local pharmacy.
