Blair wrestling earned its 37th national prep team championship at the 2017 national prep tournament held February 24 and 25 at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena. The Bucs’ final team score of 306 was 30 points higher than second-place finisher Wyoming Seminary and nearly 80 points higher than third-place finisher Malvern Preparatory School, and Blair won all 12 of its medal matches.
Six Bucs earned individual national championships: Trevor Mastrogiovanni ’20 (113 lbs.); Chris Cannon ’19 (126 lbs.); Zach Sherman ’17 (132 lbs.); Malcolm Robinson ’18 (138 lbs.); Andrew Merola ’18 (160 lbs.); and Chase Singletary ’17 (220 lbs.). This marked the second national championship for Chris, Andrew and Chase.
Third-place medals were awarded to four Blair wrestlers: Michael Madara ’19 (120 lbs.); Julian Ramirez ’19 (152 lbs.); Leonardo Tarantino ’18 (170 lbs.); and Nick Mosco ’17 (195 lbs.). Finally, Nick Incontrera '19 (106 lbs.) and William Kaiser ’18 (145 lbs.) placed fifth at their respective weights.
“The guys raised their intensity and competed extremely well in the medal round,” said head varsity coach Brian Antonelli '93. “Nick got the team off to a great start and Trevor sparked the moment with his huge overtime win. Overall, the team made great progress over the past several months and team members are better wrestlers than they were at the beginning of the season. A great deal of our wrestlers’ success came from their hustle and dedication in the wrestling room.”
