The Headmasters’ Societies Games Take Over the Hilltop

As soon as School Meeting ended, the competition began: Headmasters’ Societies Games (HMSG) are officially underway. Over the next week, the Blair community will divide into four teams, each vying for the Hardwick Trophy. Team Kelley enters as the reigning champion, coming off a stunning victory last year and eager to defend its title. They will face Team Sharpe and Team Breed, who lead the pack with six championship titles apiece, and Team Howard, tied with Kelley at five wins.

The Games kicked off with a spirited sorting of four new community members into their respective teams, a ceremony reminiscent of the sorting hat from Harry Potter. Then the competition began, as those newest additions battled for the first points of the year. Game Commissioner and Associate Dean of Students Rod Gerdsen ensures every year that the sorting is done at random, but across the hilltop students whisper about how some assignments are a “good fit” or “just make sense,” hinting toward a deeper meaning behind the sort. As each team welcomed a new member, thunderous applause echoed across the room.

Folklore like this and the spirit of HMSG has become a beloved tradition that breaks up the bitter cold of winter and bridges the transition from winter to spring athletics. The week is packed with tests of skill, luck, athleticism and wit, culminating in the always unforgettable talent show. More than a few hidden stars have surprised the community by stepping into the spotlight for the very first time. Classic events like dodgeball, cup stacking, tug-of-war and erg relays fill the schedule, while newer favorites such as flash-fiction writing and the mystery box cook-off continue to gain momentum.

HMSG is a time for the community to rally behind their colors and connect with classmates they might not otherwise meet. Colorful tutus, wigs and flags line the sidelines as students cheer at full volume, and the winning team’s rush to the stage after the final talent show performance is a top-tier hilltop memory.

So, who will win the 2026 Headmasters’ Societies Games and claim the Hardwick Trophy? Stay tuned for updates throughout the week!
