‘What Emerges’ Opens Romano Gallery Spring Season
Blair Academy

As members of the Blair community return to the hilltop from spring break, they will be treated to the intricate fiber artwork of Asake D. Foye Jones in the Romano Gallery. Ms. Jones’ exhibit, What Emerges, is a meditation on transformation through layering—of material, memory and meaning. This body of work by Ms. Jones includes art quilts and mixed media pieces that reflect what surfaces when she allows intuition, storytelling and the unseen to guide the creative process. Together, the quilts and mixed media pieces speak across dimensions, holding space for what is in process, what is becoming and what insists on being revealed. What Emerges will be on display from March 21 to April 18, and Ms. Jones will join the community for an artist talk on Thursday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m., which all are welcome to attend.

“My work invites a conversation about the intimate, the universal, his/herstory and belonging,” Ms. Jones said before the exhibition.

Ms. Jones is a mixed-media fiber artist, teaching artist and transformative art coach who weaves memory, culture, conversations and storytelling into vibrant visual form. Rooted in the traditions of textile work learned alongside her mother, Dorothy Foye—professionally known as “Miss D”—in a Philadelphia dressmaking studio. Her practice blends fabric, found materials and layered techniques into art quilts and mixed media pieces.

Ms. Jones holds an MA and MEd, and her artistic education includes study at Spelman College, Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, The Neighborhood Arts Center in Atlanta, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Cultural Center of Liberia, West Africa and more. Since 1995, she has exhibited and taught nationally and internationally, reflecting her belief in the transformative power of creating beauty from the everyday—and in how art can heal, inspire and give voice to what cannot be expressed in words, only felt.

All are welcome to attend the artist talk in Armstrong-Hipkins Center for the Arts on Thursday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m.
