Shaking off their rust upon returning from winter break, Blair again travelled to The Hill School’s Mercer Field House for a double dual meet against host Hill and MAPL rival Peddie School. Isaac Greene '24 (1600m) and Etka Ayhan '22 (long Jump, triple Jump) won their respective events for the boys’ team. Those victories, combined with a host of scoring performances from Etka (2nd, 55 m), Timmy Xi '22 (2nd, 800m and 1600m), Isaac (2nd, 3200m and a personal best 10:14.37), Brian Liu '23 (2nd, shot put), Arthur Lee '24 (2nd, high jump) and the second place 4 x 400m relay team (Abdullah Adeola '24, Ryan Duke '24, Owen Granahan '24, and Timmy Xi), enabled the boys to defeat both Hill and Peddie by the same narrow 51-48 margin.
On the girls’ side, Nikki Patterson '22 dropped her 55m time by 0.23 seconds to finish 3rd, Petra Taylor '24 knocked 1.39 seconds from her time in the 400m to capture second, Marty Dericks '22 was second in the 800m and third in the 1600m, while Chloe Lau '23 placed in the 55 hurdles and Sasha Gershman '25 did likewise in the long jump. The only girls champion was the 4 x 400 meter relay squad of Maria Andrinopoulos '23, Chloe Lau, Petra Taylor and Nikki Patterson, who did so in fine fashion, cutting a full 8.55 seconds from their previous winning time on the same track last December. In the end, Blair lost to Hill 46-37 and to Peddie 43-35.
Just two days after going up against MAPL rivals in dual meets at The Hill School, Blair spent a productive evening in New York at The Armory for the Steve Borbet Invitational. Chloe Lau dipped under 10 seconds for the first time in the 55 hurdles, placing 11th overall. Chloe, Sasha Gershman and Lila Cafferata '23 all broke the 30 second barrier in the girls’ 200m, and Petra Taylor showed she will be a force to be reckoned with in the 300m, placing third in her first-ever race at the distance. Petra was third in the 800m as well, and Marty Dericks cut three seconds off her previous time in the same event. Even more significant, Marty ran 16 seconds faster over the full mile than she had just two days earlier over 1600 meters, showing the speed she is developing on the track. Blair ran the 4x200 relay (Chloe Lau, Petra Taylor, Sasha Gershman and Nikki Patterson) that finished in 1:55.68 - leaving them hungry for more.
On the boys side, Etka Ayhan, Kaleb Nelson '25 and Abdullah Adeola all ran person best times in the 200m, Ryan Duke, Owen Granahan and Toby Strandlund '24 did likewise in the 800m, while Isaac Greene (4th place in 4:31.34), Ryan Duke and Owen Granahan kept up the fast running with three personal best times in the mile. While their compatriots were running on the Armory’s fast, banked track, Serena Khanna '25, Brian Liu, Truman Crystal '23 and Kaleb Nelson were at the shot put circle. Brian and Kaleb finished second and third, respectively. Overall, it was a fun and productive night in New York!
