Boys' Squash
Varsity
Overview
Congratulations to Youssif Mostafa '22 on becoming a 2019-2020
New Jersey (NJ) prep state champion.
Blair Academy's squash program was founded in 1993. Nearly 70 Blair students play organized squash each year, filling out competitive girls’ and boys’ varsity, junior varsity and thirds sides in the winter, as well as heavily subscribed off-season introductory and developmental programs in the spring and fall. We train and play on seven international courts in Tracy Hall. Blair is a perennial host of the New Jersey High School Championships.
The interscholastic squash season begins in late November and runs through February, when Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) team tournaments are held. Varsity and junior varsity players are encouraged to participate in squash camps and tournaments during the summer and fall prior to the season to improve their skills. Typically, 10 players make the varsity team and nine or 10 play on the JV. The varsity schedule includes approximately 16 matches, including one or two team tournaments.
Our interscholastic teams play other MAPL and non-league teams, including Hill, Lawrenceville, Delbarton, Hackley, St. Andrews, Poly Prep, Riverdale and Mercersburg. Other matches are contested against an assortment of college and university club teams, most recently from Princeton and Penn, and teams from urban squash programs such as City Squash (NYC) and Metro Squash (Chicago). Graduates of the Blair squash program have played college squash for Bates, Bowdoin, Bucknell, Williams, Navy, MIT, NYU, Washington University, Colby and Hobart.
Blair seeks both experienced and inexperienced players who love the thrill of a game that combines the intellectual challenge of chess with the exhilaration of being pushed to your physical limits. Prospective students are invited to take time during their visit to see the courts and introduce themselves or contact director of Blair squash programs Jim Moore.

Meet the Coach
Meet Coach Gerdsen
Since joining Blair's faculty in 2004, Rod Gerdsen has served in a wide variety of roles, including science teacher, academic dean for the junior class and new international students, Director of Annual Giving, admission associate, and, most recently, Associate Dean of Students. A true lover of all racket sports, Rod played both tennis and squash at Colby College and has been coaching tennis for nearly 20 years. Rod remains active as a player and looks forward to getting out of his office in the springtime to be on the courts with the team.
Rod currently lives in Insley Hall with his wife, Cassi, and their children, Kate ’20 and Jack ’24. As dorm heads, Rod and Cassi are charged with overseeing the health and well-being of 38 9th- and 10th-grade boys, a challenge they have taken on before when they ran East Hall for 11 years, a dorm of 60 sophomore and junior boys.
