Attendance FAQs

A “green sheet” is our internal system of making sure students have the proper permissions for missing Blair obligations (anything where attendance is taken, e.g., classes, practices and family-style dinner, etc.). It also is a way for students to record their conversations with teachers about missing class as well as record any necessary assignments.

A green sheet is needed anytime a student is missing a Blair obligation for which attendance is taken, e.g., classes, practices, family-style dinner, etc. The exception to this would be when a student must miss for a short medical appointment (gone for a few hours only). In this case, the student should sign out through the Health Center.

For green sheet permissions, parents should email attendance@blair.edu or Dean of Students Andee Ryerson (ryersa@blair.edu). The request should include the anticipated dates and an explanation for why the student must miss their Blair obligation(s).

If your child will miss class for more than a short medical appointment as part of their weekend, then yes. REACH requests notify dorm parents that the student will be gone, but, unfortunately, do not communicate with our attendance system. If your child is just leaving a little early for a medical appointment and then leaving for the weekend, then they should complete a REACH request and sign out through the Health Center. However, if your child is missing class for a full day or for nonmedical purposes, then a green sheet is required.

All medical appointments should be scheduled outside of school obligations. However, we recognize that sometimes that is not possible. For a medical appointment where students will be gone for only a few hours, students should sign out through the Health Center. For longer or distant appointments where students will be gone all day, students should get a green sheet from the Student Life Office.

Students leaving for a medical appointment, during which they will be gone for only a few hours, should stop by the nurse’s station in person to sign out.

Students with a recurring commitment should talk directly to Andee Ryerson, Dean of Students, to coordinate what they can miss. Missing class for outside commitments should be avoided and families should work directly with the Dean of Students to ensure their student is able to maintain the integrity of their Blair experience while continuing with their outside commitment.

If a day student is sick and cannot attend classes, parents should email attendance@blair.edu or call the Student Life Office (908-362-6121, then press 0).
